Reality Check · Resistance

Pain × Resistance

"You can't always reduce pain. You can almost always reduce resistance."

The Equation

Pain

×

Resistance

= Suffering

What This Means

Pain is unavoidable—loss, failure, discomfort, uncertainty. But suffering is pain multiplied by how hard you fight it.

Resistance shows up as: denial, bargaining, rumination, blame, or constant "why me?" The more you grip, the more heat you generate.

Resistance Patterns
  • "This shouldn't be happening" — Fighting what's already true
  • "If only..." — Replaying the past
  • "I can't handle this" — Catastrophizing the present
  • Blame — Assigning fault instead of solving
The Practice

When suffering feels overwhelming, ask: "What if I stopped fighting the fact that this is happening?" Not surrender—just acknowledgment.
